Tony Matchaba-Hove is a lecturer in the Department of Business Management within the School of Management Sciences at the Nelson Mandela University. He has a sound knowledge and practical experience in the theory and application of business management and financial planning principles, specifically in the areas of family business entrepreneurship, investment management and estate planning. He has a passion for teaching and learning, research and engagement and always strives to be creative and innovative in the way he facilitates learning and generates knowledge.
He has taught and supervised students from first year level right up to master’s level. He has supervised over 20 postgraduate students’ treatises and dissertations. Currently, he is primarily involved on BCom Financial Planning programme and the Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning, where he is the coordinator for the Principles of Estate Planning, Financial Planning Practice Management and Investment Management modules. He also currently supervising five postgraduate research projects.
In terms of his research, Tony Matchaba-Hove has three areas in which he is very passionate about, namely African family businesses, entrepreneurial orientation and financial planning. He has published articles in journals such as the Southern African Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management and the International Journal of Financial Services Management. Furthermore, he is a journal article reviewer for several academic journals. He has presented many research papers at both national and international conferences on financial planning, family business and entrepreneurship. His doctoral research focused on understanding the entrepreneurial practices implemented amongst indigenous African family businesses that have survived across generations, as well as the context in which these businesses operate.
He is also a member of the Financial Planning Institute, the Southern African Institute of Management Scientists, International Institute of Social and Economic Sciences and the Interdisciplinary Social Sciences Knowledge Community. Within the Nelson Mandela University, he is a member of the Family Business Unit and the staff member in charge of the Financial Planning Society. He serves on several committees within the institution such as the Blended Learning Committee, the Faculty Postgraduate Students Committee and the Faculty Transformation Forum, to name but a few.
Tony Matchaba-Hove is also a mentor to several students who participate in the Beyond the Classroom (BtC) programme – an initiative to help develop students’ skills beyond the classroom. He also assists students with conceptualising their business ideas and helps them with the initial process of setting up a business plan.
